If you have a sister you know, it can be much like hugging a bear, warm, fuzzy but extremely dangerous. So observes Deborah Tannen in her latest exploration of human connection, You Were Always Mom’s Favorite! Sisters in Conversation Throughout Their Lives (Random House). Siblings will jump on this book to read about pigeonholing (who’s the pretty one? who’s the smart one?), power dynamics (older sister as “mini-mom”), and the coded messages, fond or furious, that only the person who knows you best will understand.

As a middle child, I think I need to read this book. For my “middle child syndrome” complex stems further than probably conversation between sisters. Its more of a pigeonhole of being between two siblings.
