Music Videos: KeKe Wyatt “Who Knew”

KeKe Wyatt was one of my favorite singers in the early 90s. Her voice is unique and full of life. Needless to say, the fact that she is releasing a new single is great news. She is indeed one of the most outstanding singers of the last decade.

KeKe got her start singing at age two but really had it in her genes to become a singer. Her mother was a giner and father an organist and vocalist as well. Both of her parents sung primarily church music but despite that encouraged KeKe to begin cultivating a career singing secular (R&B) music.

Her career finally took off at age eighteen when she covered the 80s ballad “My First Love” originally by Rene & Angela with R&B singer Avant. It was then featured on his debut album My Thoughts which later went platinum. The single was released two years after being recorded. Its success, remaining on the Top 10 for several weeks, landing her a solo contract with MCA Records. The first single “Used to Love” from her debut Soul Sista album went virtually unnoticed but her single “Nothing in the World”, a duet with Avant, took off like a horse out the starting gates.

The success of her single, and the fact that her name was heavy in the media due to a domestic squabble with her husband, propelled sales for the album, landing it a certifiable gold release. It stayed in the 5th position on the R&B charts for weeks and sold more than one million copies reaching audiences in Japan, Korea and Europe.

After enduring two albums being shelved for various reasons, she’s now back on the scene with her fourth album Who Knew, lead by the single of the same name. The sassy vintage R&B mid-tempo features KeKe’s vocals at its finest. The corresponding video features various close-ups of the singer along with a storyline which inserts her love interest in several different scenarios. The classic black and white shots embedded sporadically in the video are actually quite captivating and not ones you would expect in your ordinary R&B music video. This track is refreshing and the video is standard but somehow just a few notches from divine.
