Fantasia Reminds Us ‘Even Angels’ Learn To Fly

15n6qkyShe’s won American Idol. She’s been on Broadway. She has a new reality show. And after four years, Fantasia Barrino is finally giving us some new music to hold us over until the release of her album and frankly, it’s about time.

I love me some ‘Tasia like the next chick. Her affinity to use those girtty funky vocals and her love for screaming for no apparent reason, I mean how could you not love that. In fact, her rendition of “Summertime” that she performed on American Idol is one of my favorite live performances of hers.

But, it seems throughout the span of her career, there have been an ample amount of hit and misses. For every unnecessary but catchy bump like “Hood Boy”, there was a emotional and vocally stellar performance like “Free Yourself”. Even though ‘Tasia seems to try hard to stay in the forefront of our minds, she’s been wailing to no avail.

Well, that’s until now. ‘Tasia will perform her new single “Even Angels” on her Oprah appearance tomorrow that signifies the start of a reined in new sound and hopefully the beginning of a career that will find her some real success. “Even Angels” does away with the raw R&B tapered vocals we’re used to hearing and picks up a confined pop oriented sound that sounds a lot like something we might hear from the Carrie Underwood’s and Jordin Sparks’ of the world. Although it’s a different sound for her, it is exactly what she needs to gain mass appeal.

The track written by Heather Bright and produced by The Stereotypes, is a sentimental ode to recalibrating one’s inner compass. It sports a lovely, well-defined melody that provides a border for a singer with a penchant for hollering way outside the lines. This unexpected vocal restraint, combined with a flitting piano line and lyrics that follow the singer pondering how to go at it alone on the most ordinary of days, build slowly and almost imperceptibly. Then, ‘Tasia reaches a thunderous, echoing climax exclaiming — “even angels, even angels learn to fly…fly…fly…fly.”

Here’s hoping that this track gives ‘Tasia the wings she needs to really fly. And from where I sit, she’s well on her way to cruising altitude.
