Lady Gaga, in all her grandeur and over the top antics, has single handedly brought back the excitement surrounding a music video. She made us wait for it. Then told us it was coming. Then it didnt. So we waited some more. And now, its here. The premiere of the Lady Gaga video “Telephone” featuring Beyonce has finally premiered and let me tell you, its nearly ten minutes of visual awesomeness in full technicolor.
You’ve got Beyonce in her first girl on girl role, Gaga kissing a girl, massive product placement, over the top fashion and accessories like only Gaga can do, a mini movie storyline and bam, you’ve got a video that’s definitely worth the wait.
Now I’m definitely not the one to be sipping on the Lady Gaga Kool-Aid like the rest of the world and the Internet seems to be doing but I will give kudos to great artistry when I see it. And this video is just that. Gaga recognizes that a video is just as much a piece of art as the Mona Lisa or the mural on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and until now have been filled with a few short minutes of mediocrity. That’s probably why networks have given up devoting their entire airtime to playing them.
Gaga just may be able to change their minds with this video. No need to give you a play by play of what you’ll see but they’ll be soda can rollers! sandwiches! Tyrese’s bad acting! platforms! plastic cowboy hats! product placement! and tons of excitement even coming from those of us (like me) who can’t figure out what it is that’s in Gaga’s water that’s got her always so left field. But from the looks of this “Telephone” video, I’m sure she’ll have many other artists inspired to create visuals that live up to this kind of hype. Gaga gives us awesome here and sadly, I’m not afraid to admit it.
