When Jill Scott Asks Her ‘Call’ To Be Heard, We Listen

JillScottThere are things that happen in life that sometimes we can’t explain. We lose love, we find it again, life is birthed, taken away and none of these things we can figure out, even if we tried. If our lives could have a soundtrack,  no doubt it would include many Jill Scott tracks. Why? Because she’s one of the few artists who manage to say all the things within the few short minutes of a song that many of us want to say but can never find the words to.

Her music touches us, me especially, on a level that makes me feel like I know her — makes me feel that she’s voyeur into my personal moment, jotting them down only to be revealed within the lyrics of one of her songs. Although I know this isn’t the case, I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels like that. Her newest track “Hear My Call” is the latest addition to her growing catalog of music that appeals to our vulnerability and humans and makes us really feel she knows our struggles.

She initially debuted this song in a performance at the 41st NAACP Image Awards but honestly, I didn’t really pay that much attention to the actual song but more concerned with the performance of it. Now that the song has been released as an audio only, it begs you to listen to the words of this song where she begs God to give her the strength to deal with a love that’s been lost. She’s desperately and passionately asking God to ‘hear her cry’ that is genuine and beautiful it will almost bring a tear to your eye. The melodies, the tinkling and crecendos of the accompanying piano and the pain held behind each note Jill sings — this track is brilliantly beautiful.

Take a listen to the track below and if you’d like to own it, you can download it from the NAACP website with proceeds going towards Haitian relief funds.
